The Amazing Applications of 3D Printing in Surgery (Aug 8, 11AM to 11:50AM)

Surgeons generally rely on routine radiographs, CTScans and MRIs to provide them two (2D)or three-dimensional (3D) images of disorders that they have to treat.

Very often they use these images in creating a pre-operative template on how they will plan to operate on their patients. It has been their experience as well that sometimes they are confronted with much more complex intra-operative findings other than what they have conceptualized from images at hand.

This lecture will show how ordinary desktop 3D printing can give surgeons a detailed three-dimensional model for a more accurate pre-operative surgical templating.

GLYN NAPOLES, Research and Development Specialist, American Technologies
3D Printing Process and their Industrial Application  (Aug 8, 3:50 to 4:40PM)

CEDRIC NG, CEO, Omnifab, Inc
The Opportunity of Adopting 3D Printing in the Philippines (Aug 8, 5:10 to 6PM)

Cedric Ng  wants to start a conversation on how we, as a country should align ourselves strategically with the rise of the 3D printing industry.

He will discuss  the opportunity of adopting 3D printing in the Philippines and why we should invest in this technology today. 3D printing is a truly disruptive technology that will have a major impact on our everyday lives in the very near future. It changes the way we think about design and manufacturing in a fundamental way, giving users the ability to literally bring their ideas to life. This technology is a true driver of innovation and creativity.

According to experts, 3D printing is set to grow from a $3 billion industry in 2013 to a projected $20 billion industry by 2021. The massive growth in the adoption of the 3D printing technology will drive a new demand for people that can operate the 3D printing machines.

Studies are already showing the rising trend in the demand for “workers with 3D printing skills” and will soon become an “in-demand job skill”. Because of the rapid growth of 3D printing, most companies are having difficulty in finding candidates with the right skills. Indicating a high demand and low supply of “high-skilled workers with 3D printing skills”

"We have a great opportunity in front of us and we have the capability to fill this demand. Filipinos have a number of competitive advantages on developing 3D printing skills over many countries. 3D printing is not only about technology and engineering, it is also about design and creativity. Our people are naturally creative, has very good English communication skills and are technologically inclined, being able to pick up technological skills quite fast. This gives us the perfect combination for developing and supplying “high-skilled workers with 3D printing skills” to further sustain the Philippines’ growth and development.

The capacity of new technology to create and destroy jobs at the same time is a major catalyst of modern economic and social change. And the most important question is will technological change create more jobs for us or destroy us?

We’ve all heard many times how important education is. It is the backbone of any great nation and it is the key to the growth and success of a country. But more importantly is WHAT we teach our people. I urge us to consider focusing on 3D printing technology and invest in our future.

Everything starts with EDUCATION. We should start to expose, educate and train our people about the 3D printing technology as early as possible to set ourselves up for the opportunities of tomorrow and to make sure that we are on the right side of technological change.

We should give our people the skills that will not only prepare them for the future work environment but skills that would give them a competitive advantage over others and offer them a chance at a better life while raising the standards of the Philippines"--Cedric Ng

ERICK CHUA, Founder, Shapecloud.ph
What 3D Printing Means for the Youth and New Businesses  (August 7,  5:10 to 6PM)

We can recall how many of us as children thought up big ideas for what we wanted to do in the future; To become inventors, creating new machines that would help us solve world problems; or to become engineers, taking things apart to learn how they worked. Back then, it was never easy to sell a “creation” made from play-doh or lego blocks, but imagine how things are today, and what that could mean for the creative minds of the youth. Now, with what we’ve seen from the technology of our age, would it be so unbelievable if a high school student came up with his own unique aesthetic design for a rocket ship? Even in elementary, the youth sector is getting involved in 3D modelling and 3D printing, which says so much about the potential for innovation in the coming years.

Erick will  be introducing a few of the basic applications that have been created for easy 3D modelling/printing, and these would serve as a pin drop in the hundreds of others out there making it more and more accessible for both children and entrepreneurs to take advantage of this movement. The industry is growing, and the rules of logistics changing with them.

"New businesses can have prototypes delivered to them within a week or less, as compared to month/s worth of lead time from years back. At least, this is what we can see for many countries around the world, and I believe it’s more than a possibility for the Start-ups being built in the Philippines.Allow me to tell all of you how, and why my team and I believe this is the case,." -- Erick Chua
